Travel medicine
At LEO, my journey begins.
Travel medicine in Leopoldstadt: well prepared, wherever you're headed.
Before you set off, it's worth having a chat. In our travel medicine consultation, we look together at where you're travelling, how long you're staying and what your body needs for the trip. You'll go home with a clear plan for your journey.
Who a travel medicine consultation is for
A consultation is a good idea whenever your trip goes beyond a classic city break in Europe. For example:
long-haul travel to Asia, Africa or South and Central America
longer stays, backpacking or work and travel
if you're pregnant, have a chronic condition or are travelling with young children
if your vaccinations haven't been updated for a while
Ideally, come and see us about four to six weeks before departure. Some vaccines need several doses before you're fully protected. But even at short notice: get in touch and we'll see what's still possible.
Travel medicine consultation: before, during and after your trip
Before your trip, we discuss your destination, recommended and sometimes mandatory vaccinations, malaria prevention and other precautions. We follow the current recommendations of the national immunisation committees and the epidemiological situation in your destination. Which vaccinations and measures you go ahead with in the end is up to you.
During your trip, a few simple basics help: safe drinking water, protection from insect bites and a well-stocked travel health kit. We'll note down in the consultation what matters for you.
After your trip, come to us if you feel unwell. In a post-travel check-up, we assess symptoms such as fever or diarrhoea and, if necessary, refer you to the appropriate specialist.
Advice by destination
Which vaccinations are relevant for you depends on your destination, the length of your trip and the way you travel. The overview below gives you a first orientation. We'll discuss your personal recommendation at your appointment.
Southeast Asia (e.g. Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, the Philippines): Common topics are hepatitis A and B, typhoid, rabies, Japanese encephalitis and up-to-date protection against tetanus, diphtheria and polio. Depending on region and season, also malaria prophylaxis.
Sub-Saharan Africa (e.g. Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Ethiopia): Common topics are yellow fever (mandatory in many countries), hepatitis A and B, typhoid, rabies, meningococcal disease and malaria prophylaxis.
South and Central America (e.g. Brazil, Peru, Bolivia): Common topics are yellow fever (depending on region), hepatitis A and B, typhoid, rabies and, depending on the area, malaria prophylaxis.
Travel vaccinations and vaccination advice
At LEO, you get advice and vaccination in one place. We can either give you the travel vaccines you need here, or you collect the vaccine from the pharmacy with a prescription and we administer it here. Please bring your vaccination record so we can check your vaccination status and see what's still missing.
Alongside travel vaccinations, we also take care of the vaccinations generally recommended in the Austrian vaccination schedule. So while you're here anyway, we'll bring your vaccinations up to date.
Malaria prophylaxis
There's no vaccine against malaria for travellers. But you can still take precautions: we discuss whether preventive medication (chemoprophylaxis) makes sense for your destination, which one, and how to protect yourself further with the right mosquito bite prevention.
Yellow fever vaccination
The yellow fever vaccination may only be given at officially designated yellow fever vaccination centres. We can't currently offer it. We're happy to advise you on whether you need it for your destination and tell you where you can get it in Vienna.
Travel health kit and travel advice
A well-stocked travel health kit takes a lot of worry off your mind while you're away. Together we put together what belongs in your kit and talk about topics such as food and water hygiene, protection from insect bites and preventing traveller's diarrhoea. Protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is also part of the conversation if it's relevant to your trip.
How your appointment works
So we can advise you well, please bring:
your vaccination record (or your e-card for the electronic vaccination record, e-Impfpass)
your itinerary with destinations and travel dates
information about existing conditions and any medication you take
Please allow a little time for the appointment. At the first consultation, we take the time to go through your trip in detail.
Costs
Travel medicine is a private service and is usually not covered by health insurance. We'll tell you the cost of the consultation in advance. Which vaccinations are added, we'll discuss during the consultation before any costs arise.
Schedule an appointment
For your travel medicine consultation and vaccinations, please book a doctor's visit. It is best to plan this a few weeks before your departure, as some vaccinations require multiple doses. If you are visiting us for the first time, please select "New Patient".
